CMS’ New MU Stage 2 Delay Proposal to Prove Helpful for Anesthesiologists

CMS has proposed regulations that would push back the implementation of stage 2 of meaningful use for those physicians who will not be able to install the 2014 edition Certified Electronic Health Record Technology in time, and this will prove beneficial for anesthesia practices, according to an Anesthesia Business Consultants blog post.

The proposed regulations allow eligible providers to use 2011 edition CEHRT for either stage 1 or stage 2. Eligible providers would also have the option of attesting to the 2013 definition of meaningful use core and menu objectives and using the 2013 definitions of the clinical quality measures. The rule would only be valid for the 2014 reporting year.

According to the blog post, the delay in the deadlines for implementation of 2014 edition CEHRT would permit anesthesiologists to earn an incentive payment based on 2011 edition systems and the 2013 stage 1 requirements.

“All in all, the proposed rule is a welcome reprieve,” said Tony Mira, president and CEO of Anesthesia Business Consultants in the blog post.
