The document updates the “Practice Guidelines for Chronic Pain Management,” adopted by the ASA in 1996 and published in 1997. According to the ASA, the purpose of the guidelines are to optimize pain control, recognizing that a pain-free state may not be attainable; enhance functional abilities and physical and psychologic well-being; enhance the quality of life of patients; and minimize adverse outcomes.

The guidelines cover a variety of topics, including patient evaluation, multimodal and multidisciplinary interventions, ablative techniques, acupuncture, blocks and epidural steroids.
