The handbook calls for advance practice nurse anesthetists to attain independent status and function without the support or supervision of a physician. Dr. Fitch presented ASA’s case for maintaining the VA’s long-standing Anesthesia Service Handbook as the anesthesia care guide for veterans.
ASA was told that the handbook has not been finalized and that the VA is considering a public comment period if significant differences remain after meetings with external stakeholders.
