ASA Looks for Anesthesia Exemption to Meaningful Use Stage 3

The American Society of Anesthesiologists is looking to the Department of Health and Human Services to ease Stage 3 meaningful use requirements for anesthesiologists.

Anesthesiologists were granted a hardship exemption in the Stage 2 final rule to avoid penalties, and ASA is looking for similar consideration for Stage 3, which goes into effect in 2016.

ASA would like anesthesiologists to be exempt from clinical summary requirements, syndrome surveillance, e-communication with patients and computerized order entry for transfers of care objects.

The nature of an anesthesiologist's interaction with patients can make it difficult for them to comply as meaningful users.
