Anesthetic Drugs Part of Drug Class With Highest Percentage of all Shortages, GAO Says

The Government Accountability Office released a report on drug shortages, which found anesthetic and central nervous system drugs are among the class of drugs experiencing the highest frequently of shortages, at 17 percent of all shortages, according to an American Society of Anesthesiologists report.

In 2012, the U.S. Congress directed the GAO to study drug shortages through the Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act.

The report also recognized the FDA has improved its response to drug shortages and has effectively worked to prevent more potential shortages, however, “challenges remain.”

The ASA is reviewing the report and its recommendations.
