Anesthesiology Residency Programs to Include Required Simulation Training

At its Feb. 2011 meeting, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Board of Directors approved a revision that requires anesthesia residents to participate in at least one simulated clinical experience each year.

The requirement for ACGME-accredited programs becomes effective on July 1, 2011. While the simulation experience can be provided in a formal simulation center, ACGME does not require that any program use a formal simulator or have a simulation center. However, programs are encouraged to incorporate surgeons and nurses into the simulation experience.

ACGME also believes that a formal debriefing mechanism is an important component of each simulation session in order to ensure that participants receive meaningful competency-based outcomes assessment.

Read the ACGME newsletter release on the simulation requirement.
