Anesthesiologist Dr. Andy Harris Introduces Legislation to Repeal Non-Discrimination Provision of PPACA

Republican Rep. Andy Harris, MD, the first physician anesthesiologist to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, has introduced legislation that aims to repeal the non-discrimination provision of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, according to an American Society of Anesthesiologists news release.

The legislation — the Protect Patient Access to Quality Health Professionals Act of 2013 — aims at repealing the non-discrimination provision, which prohibits health plans from discriminating against non-physician healthcare providers who wish to participate in the plan.

In a joint letter with six other specialty societies, ASA endorsed Rep. Harris’ legislation, saying that the non-discrimination provision could be interpreted to mean that all healthcare professionals be considered as equal in education, skill and training even if their stats-based medical licenses and certifications are different.

The legislation has been referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
