American Society of Anesthesiologists and Other Groups Pen Letter to Oppose a Medicare Independent Payment Advisory Board

The American Society of Anesthesiologists and 74 other provider and beneficiary groups have written a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi opposing the inclusion of a Medicare Independent Payment Advisory Board in the final health reform proposal.

IPAB would have the authority to issue binding recommendations to Congress that reduce the per capita rate of growth of Medicare spending if spending exceeded a target growth rate and its recommendations would be automatically implemented unless Congress acted in opposition.

Other groups who signed the letter include the American College of Surgeons, American Urological Society and the Society for Vascular Surgery.
