5 insights into anesthesiologists' work day, job satisfaction

Medscape released its 2018 Medscape Anesthesiologist Compensation Report examining a variety of compensation-related factors throughout the anesthesia industry.

Medscape collected responses from 20,329 physicians in total. Anesthesiologists who responded to the survey disclosed their compensation, average work week and time spent with patients, among others.

Here are five statistics on anesthesiologist work day and employment satisfaction.

1. Concerning weekly time spent on paperwork and administrative duties:

  • 23 percent spent less than five hours
  • 29 percent spent between five and nine hours
  • 35 percent spent between 10 to 19 hours
  • 13 percent spent more than 20 hours

2. The majority of employed anesthesiologists (53 percent) do not seek out promotions. When the responses were split by gender, 58 percent of women sought promotions as compared to 44 percent of men. The report attributes this to a large already established male presence in leadership roles.

3. Twenty-seven percent of anesthesiologists said making money while performing a job they like is the most rewarding part of their job.

4. As for the most challenging aspect of their jobs, 28 percent of anesthesiologists cited too many long hours, while 27 percent said there were too many rules and regulations.

5. Seventy-six percent of anesthesiologists would choose medicine again if they had to start over, and 85 percent would stick with anesthesiology if they had to select a specialty again.
