4 things to know about computer-assisted sedation

Researchers at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle presented data on computer-assisted sedation in upper endoscopy and colonoscopy at Digestive Disease Week, according to a Medical Xpress report. Here are four things to know from the study.

1. The study authors compared computer-assisted propofol sedation with the common combination of midazolam and fentanyl.

2. Patients in the computer-assisted propofol sedation group had an average recovery time of 27 minutes after undergoing an endoscopic procedure.

3. Patients in the midazolam and fentanyl group had an average recovery time of 33 minutes.

4. Recovery time with computer-assisted propofol sedation was nearly 20 percent faster than the commonly used midazolam and fentanyl combination.
