Researchers measured the annual prevalence of cirrhosis, decompensated cirrhosis and HCC in a sample of HCV veterans from 1996-2006. Results demonstrated the number of HCV patients increased from 17,261 in 1996 to 106,242 in 2006. Also, while the prevalence of cirrhosis and decompensated cirrhosis doubled during the study period, the prevalence of HCC increased 20-fold. Researchers suggest healthcare systems should develop interventions to provide timely and effective care to this high-risk patient population.
