Medscape surveyed nearly 20,000 physicians to compile the report.

Three details:

1. Specialists in California earn $334,000, while primary care physicians earn $240,000. Nationally, specialists earn $341,000 on average, and primary care physicians earn $237,000.

2. Forty-six percent of physicians in California report having a net worth of more than $1 million, compared to 44 percent nationally.

3. Fifty-six percent of specialists and 54 percent of primary care physicians in California said they feel fairly compensated. Nationally, 54 percent of primary care physicians and specialists said they feel fairly compensated.
