92% of physicians say prior authorization delays patient care — 5 survey insights

The American Medical Association surveyed more than 1,000 physicians finding very few thought positively of prior authorization.

Here are five survey insights.

1. Sixty-four percent of physicians reported waiting at least one business day for a prior authorization decision from a health plan. Of all respondents, 23 percent reported waiting between three to five days.

2. For patients requiring prior authorization, care was either “sometimes” or “often” delayed, with 92 percent of providers reporting some type of care delay.

3. Seventy-eight percent of providers reported patients sometimes abandoned treatment as a result of prior authorization.

4. Approximately 92 percent of providers said prior authorization had a negative impact on patient clinical outcomes.

5. Eighty-six percent of physicians said prior authorization burdens have increased over the past five years.
