1. Despite receiving the brain cancer diagnosis almost three years ago, Dr. Steinert maintained his practice at University of California Irvine Health Gavin Herbert Eye Institute.
2. He founded the UC Irvine Health Gavin Herbert Eye Institute in 2008, with Irvine swiftly becoming one of the leading locations for eye care in the U.S., according to David Pyott, former Allergan chairman and CEO.
3. His career at UC Irvine dates back to 2004 when Dr. Steinert took on roles including department of ophthalmology chair, Irving H. Leopold Professor and professor of biomedical engineering.
4. His awards include the American Academy of Ophthalmology Life Achievement Honor Award and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Entrepreneurship Lifetime Innovator Award, among numerous others.
5. Dr. Steinert was president of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
6. Outside of medicine, he enjoyed snowboarding and the outdoors.
