American Board of Medical Specialties awards 28.2k specialty certificates in 2015 — 5 takeaways

The American Board of Medical Specialties, a nonprofit that oversees physician certification in the United States, issued many new certificates in 2015, based on its ABMS Board Certificate Report 2015.

Here are five takeaways:

1. The board had more than 860,000 certified physicians in 2015.

2. That year, 520,000 physicians participated in ABMS’ Maintenance of Certification program, the board’s continuing learning and education program. The board requires board-certified physicians to complete approved MOC activities at least every two years.

3. ABMC awarded 28,231 new specialty certificates and more than 12,008 subspecialty certificates in 2015.

4. An ABMC board-certified physician’s average age is 55 years.

5. The South Atlantic has the highest percentage of physicians with an ABMS certificate at 19 percent, followed by the Middle Atlantic (16 percent).
