The data has measureable points from 2014, 2015 through the second quarter of 2016. Additionally it features a data point from 2005 to the second quarter of 2016.
Here are four statistics:
1. From 1995 to 2015, there have been 12,561 sentinel events; in 2015, there was 936 events and through the second quarter of 2016 there have been 439 events.
2. From 2005 through the second quarter of 2016, 5,394 of all 9,632 sentinel events have resulted in a patient’s death.
3. Sixty-seven percent of all sentinel events occur in a hospital setting; 10 percent occur in a psychiatric hospital.
4. There were 1,225 sentinel events related to a “wrong-patient, wrong-site or wrong-procedure” scenario. There were 1,167 events resulted from the “unintended retention of a foreign body” and 1,053 can be attributed to a delay in treatment scenario.
