1. If the American healthcare system were a country, it would rank as the 13th greatest emitter of greenhouse gas, according to New Haven-based Yale University research.

2. The U.S. healthcare system emits more greenhouse gas than the United Kingdom.

3. The industry also accounts for 12 percent of acid rain, 10 percent of smog and 9 percent of respiratory diseases from particulate matter.

4. The healthcare industry accounted for 10 percent of the United States’ total emissions in 2013.

5. Compared to other developed countries, the United States spends about twice the average on healthcare in terms of GDP.
