Dr. Brandt’s research interests include ischemic and vascular disorders of the gastrointestinal system, inflammatory bowel diseases, colitis, geriatric gastroenterology, AIDS and endoscopic techniques. He performed the first non-operative gastric polypectomy, the first demonstration of laser-induced regression of Barrett’s epithelium and developed a cytology balloon to diagnose infectious esophagitis in AIDS patients, among other contributions.
Dr. Brandt has served on the editorial board of numerous journals and has authored or edited more than 350 scientific publications and six books. His latest, the 8th edition of Sleisenger and Fordtran’s Gastrointestinal and Liver Disease, won first prize in the British Medical Association’s Medical Book Competition. He currently serves as associate editor for the Focal Points section of the journal Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
Dr. Brandt earned his medical degree from SUNY Health Sciences Center in New York City, and completed his residency and fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.
