Here are five observations:
1. Women make up 30 percent of funded investigators in biomedical research.
2. Men received a median of $889,000 in startup funds, while women received a median of $350,000 in startup funds.
3. Of those that received more than $1 million, 51 were men and 11 were women.
4. Carrie Byington, MD, of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, addressed the results by calling for change.
5. She suggested greater transparency in salary, formal mentorships and an accepted understanding that bias exists in hiring and resource distribution.
