Do gastroenterologists underestimate IBD severity?

United States drug manufacturer AbbVie conducted a survey that assessed whether or not gastroenterologists underestimate the severity of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, according to a report by thepharmaletter.

Here are 10 statistics from the survey, which examined physicians’ use of the Harvey-Bradshaw Index and Mayo Score indices.

•    81 percent of physicians underestimated the severity of severe UC
•    19 percent of physicians correctly assessed the severity of severe UC
•    76 percent of physicians underestimated the severity of severe Crohn’s disease
•    25 percent of physicians correctly assessed the severity of severe Crohn’s disease
•    67 percent of physicians underestimated the severity of moderate UC  
•    32 percent of physicians correctly assessed the severity of moderate UC
•    55 percent of physicians underestimated the severity of moderate Crohn’s disease
•    44 percent of physicians correctly assessed the severity of moderate Crohn’s disease
•    75 percent of physicians correctly assessed the severity of mild Crohn’s disease
•    79 percent of physicians correctly assessed the severity of mild UC
