Ultrasound-Based System Can Save Costs in Central Catheter Placement

Nurses can use an ultrasound-based system to confirm the placement of peripherally inserted central catheters faster and at less cost than traditional technology can, according to an Advisory Board Company report.

Traditionally, nurses place the PICC and then have to wait for a radiologist to confirm the placement with an X-ray. Using an ultrasound-based system that determines correct PICC placement eliminates the need for the radiologist to confirm placement with an X-ray, which saves time and money, according to the report.
