Oculoplastic Surgeon Dr. Christine Nelson Receives Wendell L. Hughes Lecture From ASOPRS

Oculoplastic surgeon Christine C. Nelson, MD, has received the 2012 Wendell L. Hughes Lecture award from the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, according to a news release.

Dr. Nelson is a faculty member in University of Michigan W. K. Kellogg Eye Center’s department of ophthalmology and visual science. She is professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences, and professor of the department of surgery, plastic surgery section.

 

Wendell L. Hughes, MD, is considered a pioneer in the field of oculoplastic surgery and the father of oculoplastic surgery, according to the release.

 

Dr. Nelson will deliver her lecture titled, “From Bench to Bedside: Genetics of Congenital Anophthalmia,” at the joint meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology on Nov. 11 in Chicago.

 

“I am honored to receive this award,” said Dr. Nelson, in the release. “Dr. Hughes is a giant in the field of oculoplastic surgery. I was privileged to meet him very early in my career and it is one of the highlights of my career be invited to give this talk.”

 

Dr. Nelson received her MD from University of Cincinnati. She then completed a residency in ophthalmology at Duke University Eye Center, and fellowships in neuro-ophthalmology at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami, oculoplastic and reconstructive surgery at University of California-San Francisco.
