The National Coordinator for Health Information Technology Farzad Mostashari, MD, said his policy-setting committee will be examining the issue. Dr. Mostashari and his experts will be looking to see if digital systems are triggering higher billing codes by allowing physicians to cut and paste records, or clone.
The committee’s involvement was prompted by a Center for Public Integrity report that medical professionals have steadily billed for higher rates, adding $1 billion to their fees.
