Researchers looked at 91 patients who underwent a nonemergent intra-abdominal IBD-related surgery from Jan. 1998 to Mar. 2011. Analyzing factors such as demographics, IBD phenotype, nutritional status, medical treatment for IBD and complications after surgery, researchers identified Crohn’s disease/ulcerative colitis, age, creatinine, blood urea, sodium, potassium and smoking as risk factors.
