As ASCs become increasingly common sites-of-service for surgical procedures, physician groups, hospitals, health systems and private equity firms are all jumping at opportunities to construct or acquire ASCs — boosting facility price tags.
Here are the five most expensive ASC projects reported by Becker’s so far in 2026:
1. Sutter Health Advanced Cancer Center & Care Complex (Modesto, Calif.)
Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health broke ground on the $380 million Advanced Cancer Center and Care Complex in Modesto, Calif in January.The ASC will have four operating rooms, four procedure rooms and save additional space for future expansions. Sutter Health expects the facility to open in 2029.
2. UM Health-Sparrow ASC (Lansing, Mich.)
UM Health-Sparrow announced plans to build the $60 million ASC in February. The project is part of a broader expansion that also includes an $83 million behavioral health hospital. Both facilities are expected to break ground this summer and open in 2028.
3. ORA Orthopedic Medical Facility (Bettendorf, Iowa)
ORA Orthopedic cut the ribbon on a 113,000-square-foot medical facility and administrative headquarters in February. The $50 million project in Bettendorf replaces the organization’s previous clinic and surgery center.
4. Covenant HealthCare Orthopedic ASC (Saginaw, Mich.)
Covenant HealthCare broke ground on the $25 million orthopedic ASC in April. The 25,700-square-foot center will consolidate outpatient orthopedic services at Covenant’s Mackinaw campus, with 44 exam rooms, four X-ray suites, casting and procedure rooms and orthotics and prosthetics services from Covenant’s rehabilitation center
5. University Orthopedics Center for Orthopedic Surgery (Attleboro, Mass.)
University Orthopedics plans to build a single-specialty orthopedic ASC as part of its joint venture with Providence, R.I.-based University Orthopedics this year. The 10,000 square foot, $10.8 million orthopedic ASC will include four operating rooms, 12 pre- and post-anesthesia bays.
