Thailand affirms case of fatal MERS virus — 7 notes

Thailand confirmed its first known case of MERS virus on Thursday.

Here are seven notes:

1. Rajata Rajatanavin, public health minister, stated two laboratories confirmed the MERS results.

2. The 75-year-old man suffering from a heart condition has been quarantined at the ministry's infectious diseases facility. He is presently in stable condition.

3. The patient was traveling with three family members who are also being monitored at the facility. Additionally, others who were in contact with the man such as nearby passengers on the plane traveling from Oman are being observed by public health officials.

4. The man did not exhibit any symptoms from MERS while traveling to Bangkok. He did experience fatigue and difficulty breathing when was admitted to a private hospital for his heart condition.

5. Director of the Bureau of Epidemiology, Thanarak Phalipat, stated the 59 individuals in contact with the patient have thus far been identified.

6. According to South Korea's Health Ministry, MERS has killed 23 people and infected more than 160 in the past month in South Korea.

7. In South Korea, more than 6,700 people are currently being isolated at home or in medical facilities.
