What you should know:
1. The virtual reality training system was created by Justin Barad, MD. Dr. Barad created the platform after he and other Los Angeles-based UCLA Medical Center residents were called to the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens to operate on a 400-pound gorilla in 2014.
2. While the surgery was a success, Dr. Barad wanted to create a tool that would better help surgeons prepare for the unknown. He found a solution in virtual reality.
3. Since launching in 2016, Osso VR is now used by thousands of surgeons.
4. Osso VR currently offers orthopedic training, but a team is working to create simulations for vascular, cardiology, urology and robotic surgery scenarios.
