An oncologist and his wife, both from Lakewood, Wash., have been charged with 20 counts of healthcare fraud and related charges for participation in an alleged scheme to overbill healthcare programs for medicine administered to patients, according to a news release from the Department of Justice.
Along with charges of healthcare fraud, Alfred Hongleung Chan, MD, and his wife, Judy Chan, have been charged with obstruction of justice and money laundering. Dr. Chan also faces two counts of making false statements. The pair’s alleged scheme, which began in 2006, is said to have boosted their Lakewood clinic’s income by $1.7 million.
Dr. Chan is accused of shredding slips of paper he gave to nurses that instructed them on how much medicine to administer. He then billed Medicare and other programs for larger amounts and altered patient records to match, according to the report.
