Here are five key points:

1. UVa Medical Center was the first hospital that CMS cited for HAIs in 2016.

2. As per CMS performance program’s guidelines, the medical center will lose 1 percent of each claim filed for Medicare reimbursement between Oct. 15, 2015, and Sept. 30, 2016.

3. This year marks the second year UVa faces the penalty, which is given to each hospital falling in the bottom quarter for rates of catheter infections, ulcers and medical staff errors resulting in accidents.

4. CMS rated more than 3,300 facilities on a scale of one to 10. UVa Medical Center scored a seven, placing it on the list of hospitals receiving penalties, along with Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center in Woodbridge.

5. Recent 2015 to 2016 data paints a different picture for UVa Medical Center. The hospital currently scores at the national benchmark or better on HAIs.
