Surgery Centers File Lawsuit Against BCBS of Georgia For Out-of-Network Practices

Several surgery centers in Georgia have filed a class-action lawsuit against Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia alleging that the insurer discouraged visits to out-of-network healthcare providers by reimbursing procedures at a fraction of the charges, according to a report by the Atlanta Business Chronicle.

The suit says BCBS of Georgia members who chose to seek coverage from providers who were not part of the plan’s “preferred network” — such as ASCs — paid higher premiums than those who stayed in-network.

BCBS has cut its reimbursement to surgery centers by 80 percent, according to the report.

Representatives from BCBS dismissed the allegations.

A similar suit by a dialysis company against BCBS of Georgia was dismissed earlier this year.
