Study: Vitamin D, Nutrients Reduce Risk of Macular Degeneration

A diet high in vitamin D and the nutrients betaine and methionine reduced risk of macular degeneration, while smoking raised the risk, according to a report in the journal Ophthalmology.

Since macular degeneration is highly heritable, using data on twins can set aside genetic factors.  Researchers at Tufts Medical Center reviewed data on identical twins from the U.S. World War II Twin Registry.

 

The lesson: Even people with a genetic predisposition to macular degeneration can lower their risk by eating lots of fruits and vegetables and not smoking, researchers said.
