Key findings from the report include the following:
• In 2011, hospitals achieved 96.6 percent “composite” accountability measure performance on 16.1 million opportunities to perform care processes linked to positive patient outcomes, up from 14.8 percentage points since 2002. A composite result sums up the results of all individual accountability measures in a single percentage rating.
• The 2011 heart attack accountability measure is 98.5 percent, up from 88.6 percent in 2002. This composite includes aspirin at arrival and discharge, beta-blocker at discharge and more.
• The 2011 pneumonia accountability measure is 96.2 percent, up from 72.4 percent in 2002. This composite includes flu vaccination, pneumococcal vaccination, blood cultures in ICU and ED and more.
• The 2011 surgical accountability measure is 97.6 percent, up from 82.1 percent in 2005. This composite includes prophylactic antibiotics and VTE medicine/treatment.
Joint Commission hospitals demonstrated improved in other areas, including children’s asthma care, inpatient psychiatric services, venous thromboembolism care and stroke care.
