Here are three things to know:

1. Choosing Wisely, established in 2011, is part of a multi-year effort by the ABIM Foundation to support and engage physicians in being better stewards of healthcare resources.

2. SHEA’s recommendations include avoiding invasive devices and not continuing surgical prophylactic antibiotics after the patient has left the operating room.

3. SHEA’s Choosing Wisely list was developed by collecting a comprehensive list of recommendations from members of the SHEA Guidelines, Public Policy and Government Affairs and Antibiotic Stewardship, Education, and Publications Committees with input from the SHEA Research Network.
