Q: What impact is the economy having on ASCs?
Richard Pence: Physicians reported lower patient volume in their offices in January and part of February, resulting in fewer surgeries. Office visits have increased, but many patients are choosing to defer their surgeries.
Q: What is the most important thing an ASC can do in 2009 to preserve profits?
RP: Be diligent with expense control. Market services to new surgeons as well as to current users.
Q: Are there opportunities in the ASC market now?
RP: There should be opportunities assuming seller (price) expectations are adjusting down with the overall market. The potential prospect of the government becoming a payor for half of the population makes projections over the next five years challenging and very conservative. It would be almost impossible to project an increase in net revenue per case.
