Researchers at the Mayo Clinic Biomechanics Laboratory recently identified several potential causes of the squeaking sound emitted by orthopedic hip implants, according to a report by the Mayo Clinic.

The sound is associated with implants made of alumina ceramic-on-ceramic and is audible to the person with the implant and those nearby.

The researchers identified disruption of the film fluid between the two moving surfaces of the implant caused by wear and tear, imperfect alignment or improper positioning as the potential causes of the sound.

By identifying the cause of the squeak, investigators can move toward eliminating it.
