Dr. Schuening said the center suffers from a lack of qualified outpatient providers. A study 10 years ago by Northwestern University Medical School noted that quality of care is about equal for inpatient and outpatient settings, but that only half of eligible outpatients could be served “because of a lack of caregivers.”
Dr. Schuening said the issue could still be a problem because patients in an outpatient setting must have significant caregiver support during and after surgery.
