Outpatient cancer care “booming” in New Jersey — 5 key notes

With the recent announcement of New York City’s Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center opening a satellite office in Bergen County, N.J., outpatient cancer care in New Jersey is becoming a trend, reports NorthJersey.com.

Here are five things to know:

1. Hospitals in New Jersey are investing heavily in cancer-treatment centers, using billboards and mailers to attract patients in a fiercely competitive market, according to the report.

2. With the increased aging population, there number of patients needing cancer care is expected to increase.

3. Cancer is a lucrative specialty to treat, and hospitals are “throwing nets” out to catch patients, according to New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute President David Kowlton.

4. As more New Jersey hospitals expand to include outpatient cancer services, spending millions on technology and infrastructure, patients can still be confused as to where to go.

5. One-month chemotherapy costs at a hospital are 34 percent higher than the cost of one-month chemotherapy care at a physician’s office, according to the report.
