The outbreak, which is not contagious, has so far affected 11 patients, two of whom died. State and federal officials have recalled epidural steroid injections, which the 11 patients received between July 30 and Sept. 30. St. Thomas has already contact and tested more than 700 other patients who received the injection in this time frame.
Two other healthcare facilities in Tennessee that use that specific type of epidural injection will also reach out to potentially affected patients. A joint state-federal investigation is ongoing.
