The rules follow several high-profile reports of NIH-funded researchers failing to disclose millions of dollars in payments from companies with a financial stake in their work.

Total amounts paid by all companies to a researcher exceeding $5,000 must be disclosed. Universities and other institutions employing the researchers must collect the data and provide for public access.
