New healthcare app targets readmission rates: 5 things to know

Binghamton (N.Y.) University, State University of New York students created an application that aids in reducing readmission rates, according to News-Medical.

Here are five things to know:

1. The Android mobile app, Post Discharge Treatment and Readmission Predictor, won second place in the 2016 Institute of Industrial and System Engineers CIS Division Mobile App Competition.

2. The app offers a messaging service for providers and patients.

3. Additionally, it provides a readmission risk rate based on the data-based assembled prediction model. This model increases prediction accuracy by 20 percent over the traditional logistic regression prediction models.

4. The app alerts providers of high-risk patients, as well as predicts a patient’s readmission risk by comparing the patient’s status to historical records.

5. The developers are enhancing the quality and user-facing template of the application.
