National Patient Safety Foundation, created by AMA in 1996, sponsors NPSAW each year to promote patient safety in healthcare. The week also honors patient safety advocate John Eisenberg, MD, MBA.

AMA provides several patient safety resources for physicians, including tools to improve communication, dress code standards to reduce infection and a medication safety checklist.
