Kentucky Legislator Urges Probe of Physicians Overprescribing Pain Meds

The speaker of the Kentucky House is urging the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure to use the state’s electronic drug-tracking system to investigate physicians who overprescribe pain medications, according to a report by the Louisville Courier-Journal.

The speaker, Rep. Greg Stumbo, said the board had requested authority to use the reporting system to identify regions of the state where overprescribing took place, but it had failed to use system to identify and investigate individual physicians.

 

Fatal overdoses from prescription drugs in Kentucky have risen from 430 in 2000 to 978 in 2009.
