Hospitals Margins Decline Significantly Over the Past Year

Hospital margins fell from positive 4.6 percent in the fourth quarter of 2007 to negative 7.8 percent in the fourth quarter of 2008, according to a report from the American Hospital Association and the Colorado Hospital Association.

More than half of hospitals who reported financial information to DATABANK showed a negative margin in the fourth quarter of 2008. In addition, patient discharges fell 0.5 percent while the cost of uncompensated care rose 6.6 percent.
