Drug Shortages Spur Price Gouging, With Markups Averaging 650%

With drug shortages at record rates, gray market vendors are charging an average 650 percent mark-up for shortage drugs, according to a release by the Premier Healthcare Alliance.

In some cases, the drugs being offered may be counterfeit, stolen, ineffective or unsafe.

 

The highest single recorded mark-up was 4,533 percent for a drug used to treat high blood pressure. Normally priced at $25.90, the stated price was $1,200.
