Mark Critz, the winner, also opposes abortion rights and gun control. In the 2008 election, this House district was one of few in the nation to elect a Democrat but favor John McCain for president.
Also in Pennsylvania, incumbent Sen. Arlen Specter, who switched from Republican to Democrat and voted for the reform law, was defeated in the Democratic primary by Rep. Joe Sestak.
