Connecticut teaching hospital, Woodland Surgery Center surgeons joint venture on orthopedic ASC: 5 things to know

Hartford, Conn.-based St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, a 617-bed teaching hospital, and orthopedic surgeon group Lighthouse Surgery Holdings filed a certificate of need to build an orthopedic and pain ASC, according to Hartford Business.

Here are five things to know:

1. The parties filed the CON with the Connecticut Office of Health Care Access. Saint Francis and Lighthouse Surgery Holdings, known as Woodland Surgery Center, plan to start work on the project once they get the green light from state officials.

2. Within Hartford, the proposal estimates outpatient joint replacements will jump by 227.1 percent in 10 years; outpatient sports medicine and spine volumes will increase by 43.9 percent and 27.5 percent in the next decade, respectively.

3. In the proposal, the planners write the ASC will "ultimately improve the efficiency of the cases and allow for increasing transition of inpatient joint procedures to the outpatient arena." The surgery center would offer some total joint replacement procedures.

4. As per the deal's terms, St. Francis would own 35 percent of the ASC, while Woodland Surgery Center would hold the remaining 65 percent share.

5. The 33,000-square foot ASC would cost $26.5 million. Equipped with six operating rooms, the surgery center would house a procedure room and space for rehab and physicians.
