Congress has a week to extend federal COBRA subsides to help the newly unemployed buy health insurance, according to a report by Kaiser Health News.

The subsidies, which end June 1, pay 65 percent of the insurance premium of laid-off workers for 15 months. If the subsidies aren’t renewed, unemployed policyholders would have to pay the full premium, conceivably causing many of them to drop coverage.

Congress has extended COBRA subsidies four times since Feb. 2009.
