The Colorado Health Department has issued a $3.2 million fine against Heart Check America, a scanning company with clinics in the Denver area, for safety and monitoring violations, according to a Denver Post report.

The fine follows a chain of problems for the company’s sites in Colorado. In addition to the fine, the Colorado attorney’s general office said it has logged 143 fraud complaints against Heart Check America since Jan. 1.

The company shut down its Denver office in the spring after health officials began citing it for conducting scans without physicians’ orders. Also, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment said the company was violating rules about training employees, safety procedures and radiation exposure for workers.

The $3.2 million fine is the largest ever from the state radiation-monitoring program. Colorado officials say it appears that Heart Check America is no longer doing business nationally and the company has shut down its website.
