Dr. Hasan, whose company is called Surgimatix, devised the wound-closure device during his residency at University of Michigan Hospital and Health Centers.

Initial funding for Surgimatix came from the Frankel Commercialization Fund, an early-stage investment fund linked with the University of Michigan. In June 2010, Surgimatix completed pre-clinical testing that showed superior performance of the technology over traditional sutures.
