California Physician Sentenced to 30 Months in Prison for Role in $15M Medicare Fraud Scheme

Xinming Fu, MD, an Irvine, Calif.-based physician, was the last of 17 defendants to be sentenced in a $15 million Medicare fraud scheme, according to a report by the Mercury News.

Dr. Fu was sentenced to 30 months in prison and ordered to pay $390,000 in restitution for conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud and provide kickbacks.

Dr. Fu was involved in a scheme to provide unnecessary respiratory tests and then bill Medicare for the services. According to prosecutors, these were often given in the smoking areas of nursing homes.
